Music for Two Clarinets and Paino
Author: Liam Murphy

Dear BBoard,

I'm performing in a trio with another clarinetist and a pianist. The group, and its potential success or failure, will contribute to my final-year-of-high-school-school assessment. I have, therefore, been trying to put together a good program.

So far, the program consists of the following:

- Mendelssohn Concert Piece no. 1

- Krommer Concerto for Two Clarinets op 35 (first movement)

- Telemann Concerto for Two Chalumeaux (first movement)

There are obvious flaws in the program. As to provide a means of contrast, I am looking for music that conforms to one or more of the below criteria.

- from the contemporary period
- that is entirely slow
- that gives our pianist something to worry about

So, I was hoping for suggestions for music that will complete this program. Because I cannot hear much that is out there for our line up, I have begun the research myself, and would be grateful to hear opinions of the following pieces:

- Gary Schocker: Sonata for two Clarinets and Piano

- Lotti Amit-Kalev: Divertimento for two Clarinets and Piano

- Charles Camilleri: Divertimento no. 1 for two Clarinets and Piano

- Jaroslav Mastalir: Duo Concertante for two Clarinets and Piano

- Anything written by Genzmer

Thanks in advance for any advice,

- Liam

My step-daughter and I are preparing the Schocker for her senior recital in a few weeks. It is definitely contemporary and should be a crowd-pleaser. The first movement is not fast but will tax your pianist, the second movement is very slow, quite beautiful, and could stand alone, and the third movement is moderato, mostly quarter = 88, and a lot of fun.

Thanks Dan!

I had a feeling that the Schocker might be the ticket; aside form the novelty of the composer's name, it's nice to hear that it's also good music : )

It would be especially good to play something *specifically* written for two clarinets and piano; we are yet to rehearse such music.

Our program cannnot exceed 30 minutes. Could you estimate how long the entire work is?

I'm still open to more suggestions.

Thanks again,

- Liam

Times from a recording of the Schocker with Stanley and Naomi Drucker: first and third movements each 4:20, second movement 5:54.

The Telemann 1st mvt ends on the dominant chord, not the tonic.... best to do the 1st then 2nd mvt so you end in the right key!

Donald,

Well it's a good thing that I meant to say the last movement then : )
