 Amati C clari Mouthpiece

Hello. Not a new subject probably. Can anyone suggest a suitable mouthpiece for the Amati 351 C clarinet. I am currently using the mouthpiece that came with the clarinet, No. 3 fibracell reed and what looks like a Rovner Dark ligature that I pinched from my alto sax. I am fairly new to clarinets.

Do you also play a Bb clarinet? If you do, have you tried your Bb mouthpiece with the C clarinet? I'm pretty sure most (all?) C clarinets made today are supposed to work with a regular Bb clarinet mouthpiece.

Pretty much all stock Amati mouthpieces I've tried varied from not good to just terrible, most closer to the latter. There is a good chance that an inexpensive student mouthpiece like Yamaha, Fobes Debut, etc. will be better. Maybe you can try?

On my C clarinet (not amati), I have a specific C clarient mouthpiece, made by what I've seen on this forum called "a custom mouthpiece maker". I still use my Bb for the C clarient because the C mouthpiece is very problematic.

Thanks for your response. No I don't have a Bb clarinet. I have an alto sax, a 1927 Buescher with a Runyon Jazz mouthpiece which is so different to play that there is obviously very little comparison in the feel of the instruments. One of the reasons I got the clarinet was to fit into a small orchestra that my daughter plays in. The clarinet was warmly accepted. More so than the sax. Most of what I play in the orchestra is more suited to concert pitch instruments. Saves all the fingering gymnastics.
I have heard that the Vandoren 5RV and 5RV lyre would be a good place to start for Bb clarinet but I was wondering if they would suit the C clarinet considering the differing acoustics in the C and Bb. Has anyone out there had success with with the Amati 351.

A Bb clarinet mouthpiece should probably work with your C clarinet. It is best to meet a good clarinet player/teacher so they can check if there is a problem with your current mouthpiece and reed (it is hard for a beginner to tell sometimes). They can check a Bb mouthpiece (maybe they have more than one) to see how that works on your C clarinet (probably no problem), and recommend what to buy, etc. Or maybe the mouthpiece that came with your clarinet is ok.

(Disclaimer - I am seller of the Forte' Bb and C clarinets)
Ben Redwine makes a custom mouthpiece for the Forte' C that many feel helps their playing experience. Many Bb mouthpieces will also work but it takes a little experimentation to find one that works well with the "C" clarinet. Several other custom mouthpiece makers have "C" mouthpieces and you should check them out on the sponsor's page. You may be lucky and find a mouthpiece that works well with both the Bb and C, both playing at optimum performance, but this is a very individual thing.
