 Uh-oh, now it's official...
Author: tictactux 2017

...kind of. Our favourite condition has been blessed with an entry in Wikipedia. I wonder when shrinks rig up their couches with music stands...

Do you know of any scientific research in this area? Or is ours just a variety of the age-old hunter-gatherer behaviour?

Just today I couldn't withstand the temptation to buy a Noblet Artist with silver-plated keywork. Sigh.

Well, the term might be relatively new but the condition is ancient as your age-old comment supposes. Bibliophiles represent one limb of the tree and I suspect Jay Leno's auto/bike collection is more than an investment. As a kid, for me it was marbles.

Ben, did you see the full Boehm Amati Eb clarinet on you-know-where recently?

I vote that we rename the problem CAS (Clarinet Acquisition Syndrome) which neatly suggests that CASS (Clarinet and Saxophone Society) is what you should join to either feed it or deal with it.

(disclaimer - I have no association with CASS other than as an on-off member and do not stand to gain in any way by an increase in numbers).

Now that's an ailment I don't usually associate with us. (or maybe it's because of the onerous repair/supply costs of doubling)

Now GUITAR players on the other hand....

I'm beginning to suspect it's everybody who plays an instrument of any kind, and double it for the vocalists, who can't buy new larynxes (yet...) but can and do obsess endlessly over their physical condition: nutrition, sleeping habits, weight, exercise, etc..

You think it's unique to musicians? You should see photographers! [grin]

Knitters often suffer from YAS (Yarn Acquisition Syndrome) which can lead to a situation known as SABLE (Stash Accumulation Beyond Life Expectancy).

Anyone here suffer from CABLE?

An old work colleague of mine had seriously bad YAS. We worked in Mayfair in London and at least once a week she had to go visit the haberdashery dept in the big John Lewis nearby.

Can't resist this one. My "other" main hobby is woodworking, and I probably have 2 or 3 of every commonly used small tool there is when I really may not use even one for a year, or more. Normally though, table saws being the exception (I have two), I only have one of each of the larger shop tools...only because I don't have space to put them in my garage workshop.

Woodworkers have a favorite phrase when it comes to tools..."sliding down a slippery slope".

The worst of woodworker GAS people are what's commonly called Neanderthals...those that primarily only use hand tools (as opposed to power/corded tools). Talk about collectors...most Neanderthals have 15 or 20, or more, hand planes, and they proceed to brag about whose ancient Stanley plane is the best, etc, etc.

The only way you'd get me to give up my grandfather's #62 is to pry it out of my cold, dead hands ...

Similarly: FAS and associated FABLE (Fabric Aquisition Beyond Life Expectancy). Inherited that syndrome from my mother.

I feel the same way about my reconditioned 1957 Bernina 730 sewing machine. It'll just about sew through a brick.

If you think that clarinetist are bad you should see my son-in-law. He fishes and must have over 30 rods mostly indistinguishable from one another and at least a reel for each to say nothing of the lures which must amount to over 100. Just to go fishing in a local pond for an hour he takes at least 5 rods.
