 New Years resolution for 09
Author: Ed Palanker
Date:   2008-12-31 00:30

I'd like to suggest that we all make a New Years resolution to be nice to each other this coming year. There have been several times that people get a bit personal on our bulletin board. Sometimes the answers get down right nasty and arrogant. There are some people that know it all, at least they think they do, and most often they are very helpful to those that need help with questions or problems. Since the rest of know that no one is correct all the time and that are many ways to solve a problem, I would like to suggest that all of us, that includes all the regulars on this BB, make a New Years resolution to be kind to each other. The very least don't get personal and insulting, even if you are right, which of course you may or may not be all the time. In any case, lets just all be nice, OK?
Happy New year to all of you! ESP www.peabody.jhu.edu/457

The most fun I usually have on this board is reading Tony Pay's posts. The last thing I want him to do is play nice!

I had previously resolved to stop making resolutions, but I can agree to that. Happy new years all!

Your " fun" is at someone else's expense. I've been on the receiving end of not nice. It's not that pleasant. I wish everyone a happy and " nice" New Year.

Yes, yes ....... and let's all be kind and encouraging to the older beginners.
On my other post (give and take) I used the word OPSIMATH- (Gr) "0ne who comes to learning late in life."
They are the lucky ones, I sometimes think........ H&P.

Here's one resolution I'll make: listen to more music. Listening definitely motivates my playing, and sometimes I neglect listening because I'm already overwhelmed with "stuff" to do (and I'm afraid of piling on one more task--"ooh, must practice that!"). Yet when I listen more, I enjoy life more, and enjoy playing more too. I know, it's one of those "like, duh!" things to a lot of people, but sometimes I forget.

In the "thanks" department, I'm really grateful to everyone on the Board, because no matter how dunderheaded the question, I always learn from the answers. And, not that I'm against civility, but no matter how mean-spirited or ad-hominem some of the responses get, the Board has a way of taking care of them, too, and righting the balance back toward civility.

So my thanks to everyone, Mark & GBK and Board stalwarts AND all the newbies, and may you all have a wonderful New Year with.....I started to type "nothing but good reeds," but we ALL know better than that!

Cheers all!
DougR

Well said, Ed. The arrogance and seemingly ad hominem attacks of some on this bulletin board were one of the reasons I stopped "tuning in" to this BB for several months. While some may deem such remarks as "clever" or "witty", to me it was getting tedious.

A better sense of decorum would be very much welcome in 2009.

I agree with Ed and everyone else. I started reading this BB in June and, also, have been on the receiving end of the nastiness and it is embarassing and unpleasant to say the least.

It is of note to mention that, even if you are perhaps not of the mind to try to be nice just for the sake of being nice and respectful, that you at least consider the harm it would do to your professional image if one was to find out that a sn that was constantly doleing out rude comments here was yours...

Personally I go with trying to be nice because no one is ever finished learning and we all have something to offer.

Thank you to everyone who has helped me in the last year and especially those who have recently helped me with my Schumann question. Good luck to everyone and have a great year! :-)

Best! :-)
