I know this has been discussed before but I was looking for some experiences people have had with the so called young beginners clarinets, like the Lyons C or Kinder Eb. When I started teaching I refused to teach younger than 8 or 9, but having started some young recorder pupils recently I am more in tune with how 6/7 year olds learn.
For anyone too little for the standard Bb, are the smaller clarinets really a good start, or are they just more trouble than they are worth? I've heard varying accounts from very good to 'waste of money'.

I've heard of students learning Suzuki method on simplified C clarinets with fewer keys. Less complicated and are lighter so they don't hurt their hands.

I had a student years ago who played a Lyons C clarinet. She was 8 years old. She did a great job and played very well on it. The instrument was fantastic overall, but there were times when the mechanism was problematic. Keep in mind that the ENTIRE horn is plastic including the keys.

I started on an Eb clarinet when I was in 3rd grade in 1963 or so. My father was a band director with a school Eb that wasn't currently being used so he brought it home for awhile for me. I had such an easy, easy start. I was "over the break" by week two. I played the alto sax parts in the school band. I would love to see more kids get started on a smaller instrument.

I started a little before I was 7 and I started with a Vito Eb clarinet. I moved to a Bb clarinet I think about two years later. Before I started we (me and my parents) went to look for a teacher in a conservatory. The first place was like you when you started teaching, only agreed to teach clarinet from 9 years old, and suggested violin instead. They succeeded at nothing except making a young kid cry..... Then the next place had a special teacher who said she have heard about some people in Holland starting younger kids on Eb clarinet, and it continued from there.....

Julian Bliss (aged 4) was taught on a Lyons C clarinet...seems to have worked out OK for him.
