I think it is ridiculous. Go get some recordings....listen to them...and then tell me that the Philadelphia Orchestra of today is, as Szell used to say, "Second to None". Especially the woodwinds.

Lists like these are always bogus and usually not worth the time reading.
That said, I agree with this one. The Royal Concertgebouw has been my favorite orchestra for years and now has my favorite conductor. It's nice to see them getting some love.

That's a rather outrageous list. I generally don't pay attention to these lists. Its funny, because whenever a list like this comes out....they completely differ from source to source. One: The london symphony should not be that high and Chicago should arguably be even higher. Basically, I have many problems with the list, that I won't even go into. hahaha.

This list reminds me of some of the really idiotic lists Yahoo seems complled to post almost every day on its home page. Someone must find them interesting, but it's all silly to me. Good music is something everyone everywhere should cherish and treasure, regardless of how your local orchestra stands (or doesn't) on the list.

Every orchestra is 'the best' in their own way, no one of the top orchestras is really better than any other - it's all a matter of personal preferrence as to which orchestra we as individuals consider to be 'the best'.
Personally I consider the Berlin Phil to be my favourite orchestra, but I wouldn't say in a generalising sweeping statement that they're 'the best' when there are others on the list (and others that aren't) that are also among my favourites.

Of course lists are inane, everybody's list will be different in the same way that each will choose a different brand of soap or toothpaste.
A reasonable sample could be achieved on this board alone, maybe we should have another 300+ post thread with everyone's own list?
Just to balance smoreno for a start, I'd have the LSO in its position if not higher, and would have more than one British orchestra in the top 20, but then I hear the British orchestras more than others anyway. 7 US orchestras in the top 20? Not in mine - no more or less valid than a Gramaphone list.

This ranking is based on a poll of critics, made by Gramophone magazine.

Seems to me that a ranking based on recorded performances would not necessarily agree with a ranking based on live performances. But a ranking based on live performances would be very hard to organise, given that few critics will get the chance to hear large numbers of different orchestras.
Then there is the question as to whether we are really ranking orchestras rather than conductors. If Mariss Jansons with the Concertgebouw is "better" in some sense than Rattle with the BPO, does that necessarily mean that the Concertgebouw is the better orchestra? (I give this merely as a concrete example - I'm not trying to imply anything about my own preferences.)

Who would you include? Not to start an argument, just wondering.... A few years ago, Birmingham would have been there, not so sure now.

It's interesting to se so many objections on this thread made by people in the United States..I wonder why...
This list is compiled by critics from around the world (including the U.S)
& naturally opens debate as critics 'critique' on a matter of their own opinion..
Having said that, I would say that they've got it pretty much spot on....except the London Symphony should naturally be in the top slot... ;-)

I wouldn't ever say that Americans are upset at the list because an American orchestra isn't number one...after all, there are 7 US Orchestras in that list, so its not about national pride...if it was, we'd be the happiest country of them all. lol.
It's, yet again...about personal opinion. Check any "professional" list of the best orchestras and they differ greatly. I realize now that its not even worth stating my own opinions of what the rankings should be because....as it is....it is my own personal opinion. Just as the list is. No one can say who THE best orchestra is, anymore. Not in this day and age, as there are pluses-minuses and distinctly different qualities about every orchestra and different aesthetics in different parts of the world. It is all extremely subjective.

They're all great orchestras. Just like the famous football quote, any one could play better than the other on any given day. As far as I'm concerned, as a symphony player, the best orchestra is the one that pays my salary. ESP
