 Clarinet Stability
Author: Rusty

I`m trying to get some stabilty and grip to my holding of the clarinet when standing (or maybe marching) and when playing notes like the mid G there is nothing much holding on.
Has anyone tried some of these special thumb rests like the Ton Kooiman Etude? I don`t have any thumb pain, just thought they might give some more hold.
Been trying some neck straps but there must be something better.

You can play 'open G' (and the other throat notes) with some or all of your right hand fingers down to improve not only the stability, but also add more resonance to the throat notes.

Yes, you can help stabalize your clarinet by adding the right hand to open G4 and the other "throat" tones, but the bottom line is, if your clarinet is wobbly with just the thumb, your embouchure is either not yet strong enough (which comes from lots of practice) or it is not set correctly (firm enough "bite" and--again--lip support from the top and sides). You should be able to march and play G4 holding your clarinet with only your embouchure and your thumb, and with more playing experiance, you will be able to, naturally (not something to worry too much about). In the meantime, try Chris's excellant advice given above.

BTW, if you think holding your clarinet while playing G4 is insecure, try walking about the room holding a flute to your embouchure with just your right hand thumb and little finger. Or a sax in front of you, mouthpiece in position but not in your mouth, with just the neckstrap and right hand thumb (no other fingers on any keys). Both are examples or learning how to balance your instrument and sort of "become one" with it. Good luck...........
