Cool to see, but the opening was way too mechanical.

What are their ages? They look like they are in their twenties, not kids.

Having seen many other videos of Japanese high school bands, I can vouch for the fact that these are, indeed, high school kids. I think the whole presentation is fabulous, I just wish they hadn't cut out the flute solo!

Is it normal in Japan to have that much space between players or is it something just for that competition?

It wouldn't be the players who I wrote were being too mechanical, it is the conductor conducting the opening very mechanically. The players are playing really well.

Could their age be possibly more than 17 which is typically the average high school senior? (do schools in Japan go higher in age before college?)

They are fabulous, great sound, they don't look too old either for high school kids, maybe they are all juniors and seniors though.
I didn't think the conductior was too mechanical, just staying calm and contained, the kids knew what to do. Is this their version of All-State maybe?

They are amazing for high school kids. Typically even all state groups aren't that good.

I thought they were just amazing. I had a hard enough time just learning the excerpts..in college. For these kids to just play every lick...and it sure looks like a lot of them are watching the conductor the whole time...the big solos at least from memory?
I especially like the uniforms.

I believe this may be the Saitama Sakae High School Wind Orchestra's performance in this years 2008 All Japanese Contest Finals.

Just one of many fine elemenary, junior high, high school and college bands of Japan.

My oldest son is a conductor in Japan, and some of the orchestras he conducts are "amateur" orchestras ... who play at or near professional level.

Interesting video, I must say though that I think the opening doesn't really work compared to the finale dance. You really miss the muted strings which for me gives that quality which suggests day break. Here is just sounded like note bashing. It was all very heavy and lacked any sort of lightness that is needed in this part of the ballet. At the end of the day those figures in the 2nd half of the ballet are really for effect. Ravel said so himself when he came to conduct it at the Royal College of Music in the early 20th C.

Outstanding!

Though I also prefer the orchestral version...

That puts (some) professional wind bands in this country (UK) to shame!

Fantastic!

Sure does. For kids under 19, it's amazing. I wonder if they put in 2 hours a day in band? Or if that is the only activity that they are allowed as it may take so much time that they can't do any others?

That's what I'm dealing with right now is the Sport thing with students dividing their time (not very evenly either....)
