My daughter received a clarinet recently. What are the different ways folks are able to put their name/phone number whatever on the instrument without damaging it too much or making it look like graffiti?

It might be better to just take a few photographs of the clarinet, making sure the serial number is visible.
Keep the serial number and the photographs of the clarinet in your files.
Put your name/phone number/address on a luggage attached to the case, and a duplicate inside the case.

Stupid follow up question: Where is the serial number normally? (Mind you this is a low end student clarinet if it matters any.)
I'll still take "scribing ideas" though, like somebody who was able to put it in an area normally not seen or something like that (the cork seems like an ugly place but perhaps something works in the tiny area of the lips of each piece, even if say just a fine point Sharpie).

Normally the serial number is on the back side, near the top or bottom ring of each joint (eg Bundies have only one joint serial-ed, though)
If you just want to prevent the clarinet from being confused with other player's instruments, put two inches of clear tape (office supplies) on the back side of each joint, write the name/tag/handle/nick on the tape, cover with a second layer of tape (against smearing etc). Can be removed without too much effort yet still offers protection against (innocent) mistakes.
Put business cards inside and outside the case. There still are enough honest finders out there. And teach your daughter to keep an eye on her belongings.

Not only do I have the serial numbers of my instruments photographed (sorry I haven't posted the pics of my A clarinet for identification, my computer at home got a really bad virus!) I also have the luggage tag, a label on the case itself and one on the inside of the case.

or take a pencil cushion (the foam ones sold at staples, etc) and cut it to size for covering the thumb rest). That would be easy to find. A ribbon on the handle would help too.
Don't put too much personal info on the outside of the case for security reasons of the child.

Don't mess with the corks either...A Sharpie might have some chemical which will deteriorate the cork or the glue holding it to the instrument.
If you have an engraving tool, you could engrave pretty much wherever you want on the body of the clarinet, but I'd avoid the areas around any tone hole.

I second the littering of a case with business cards. I recovered some lost luggage in Moscow (thankfully my clarinets weren't along, and the finder had honestly just taken the wrong bag) that way. The email address on my card was especially handy, given that it would have been completely unproductive to call our U.S. phone numbers.

Two high end options are
- Use letter punches for jewelery and have a name stamped into the clarinet.
- To remove the tenon corks and have a repair person engrave something onto the tenons and then replace the corks. No one can see it unless the corks are removed.

Your reason for wanting to do this is not stated which leaves replies open ended.
The main problem is just "what" piece of the clarinet do you want to identify?
Why don't you seem not to want to identify just the case?
If your reason involves simply helping identify her clarinet when it's out of the case in use during school rehearsals then why not just put a small piece of some colored tape on the barrel. Permanently inscribing I.D. on any section of the clarinet pretty much degrades its resale value.....unless she's a prodigy.

No. No prodigy. However, I purposely left it open ended because I just wanted to see a diversity of suggestions. However, if she gets a better clarinet or other instruments, I would be nice to hear of all the different wants (googleing didn't give too much help, at least yesterday). Plus, I figured some would sound like nice touches, for instance the one about stamping the name was interesting as the clarinet was a gift from the grandparents and for all I know they were considering such a thing.
That there is a number of pieces is what got me thinking I wonder what other folks do. As to the use, this is at a NYC public school, so not only theft is an issue, but just lots of going back and forth between classes etc and I did not want hustle and bustle to leave a piece left in class and absorbed into a different classes instruments and then ba-bye piece, and so on.
For now, I like the ribbon and the tape suggestions, so I'll probably print something out with a black background (it's a black clarinet) with thin white or silver writing in a small font and see if that works out and then tape that on. I might also still try a fine point sharpie even if it's just silver or gold dots somewhere so she can at least find the dot to know it's from her instrument.
I still can't find the serial number... if there is one, I seem to recall the brand name was Ceclio but the pieces they show on their web site is not this instrument, which appears to be brand new (although that of course does not mean it was just made or just put out for sale).

Silver sharpie on the inside of the bell, and silver fine-tipped sharpie on the END of the tenon (that 3-5mm flat space on the tip of each joint) or even on the INSIDE of the tenon if you're dexterious enough

you could scribe the side LH pinky lever - a nice large flat space there.
To really hide it you could also scribe on the wood joints above the cork tenons - on the thick part between the tenon and the top part of the body. of course you'll have to learn to scribe on a curve for that.
Or between the cork and the body but still on the tenon
or buy insurance if you are really worried about it

Silver Sharpie comes off easily if need be. A few months ago I went to see Eddie Daniels play at TBA. A few of us had pieces of our instruments signed by him with silver Sharpie. I had my Scott barrel signed as i didn't want to ruin anything of high value. I didn't want to regret it later like getting a tattoo of your girlfriend's name on your neck.
Another person had him sign the bell. It came off easily when wiped good with a little soapy water. So, inside the bell seems like a good place to me.

Probably the biggest risk for a band student is that some other band student accidentally picks up the wrong person's instrument.
When I was in high school, I had my case monogrammed with my initials at a luggage store (Houston Trunk Factory, I believe).
You could put a luggage tag on it, though. If you're worried about the contents getting out, you can always lock the case.
