 A clarinet barrels

What is the normal length of an A clarinet barrel and will a Bb barrel physically fit on an A clarinet and if so what are the sonic consequences of doing that?

Usually the A-barrel is 1mm shorter than the Bb.
The sockets are the same dimensions.
They will typically "fit" physically, but there will be intonation differences.

Typically (there are major exceptions) the bore of the A-barrel is slightly different. Because of this, not all A and Bb barrels interchange well. Some do, however, interchange nicely, but this is an inconsistent finding.

Discuss specifics for your clarinet with your barrel artisan, a pro player, teacher, etc...or, try them and ascertain for yourself.

Disclaimer...I make and sell barrels.

Some players use their A barrels on their Bbs for ease in switching both barrel and mouthpiece when changing between clarinets. However, as the A barrel is usually shorter, you must know how much space to leave when placing the barrel/mpc on the Bb for tuning accuracy.

The LeBlanc Opus & Concerto clarinets were designed by Tom Ridenour to use the same barrel on both A & Bb--so, no problem.

Eccept for the new Selmer Privilege Bb and A soprano clarinets which I designed to use the same barrel and have more similar feel than before.

It depends on the player, the mouthpiece and the clarinet. On my Buffets set, I also play a Selmer Signature Bb, I use Backun barrels and they’re both 67s and interchangeable. One does sounds a slight bit better on the A so I have one for each. Though I use a Backun on my Selmer Bb, because of the bore difference, I use a much smaller barrel, a 62.5, so it won’t work on my Buffet A. Our assistant player in the BSO uses the same Buffet barrel on both his clarinets, I don’t know the length. Try it, you make like it, or not. ESP www.peabody.jhu.edu/457 Listen to a little Mozart

Let me get this straight.... YOU designed the Selmers? Is that what you are saying?

FWIW the newer Selmers, and by that I mean Recitals, Signatures, and the
Privilege, have the same bore for the A and Bb, but the length you use may vary. They do NOT delineate a bore difference.

When I was playing on Recitals, I used the 645 on Bb and the 625 on the A, and made my own 635 for either.

On Buffets I use a 66 on the R13 Bb and a 65 on the A (new Vintage model) BUT the A and Bb bores are different. The maker delineates a difference for A and Bb.

I think Iceland Clarinet meant "which ++are++ designed..." and not "I designed."
