Can anyone tell me somerhing about the vintage Woodwind Company mouthpieces. Some one gave one to me. It is bright red and has the same facing as my Vandoren vr2.Help me please!!I googled it and got about nothing...

Hi Pam....do you really mean "bright red" or is it an "off" red like the old Parker fountain pens. In the last year or so there have been "bright red" mps along with other vibrant colors that are real "El Cheapos". However, in years past there were red mouthpieces that were made from both hard rubber and "bakelite". My impression is that the Woodwind Co that made mps was in Wisconsin and that they made mps for Vito clarinets and others. My further impression is that at least some of their mps were/are rather highly valued. (Vandoren made a mottled reddish/black mp similar to some of the old bowling balls....which is where the original Ebonite name came from.) Hope I got that right.

it is an orangish red, and I can tell it's old though the table and sides are close to mint,no scratches it looks like someone filed it smooth,I think. there is a circle imbedded into the mpc that says woodwind company usa with a gold concave triangle.there are two lines where ligature goes one above and below.I got it with an old buescher clarinet.

Yeh, I'm pretty sure that orangish red is either "bakelite" (phenol-formaldehyde) or Melamine. The company Plenco in Sheboygan, Wi. was (still is) a major supplier of thermoset plastic powders for molding. That O-R color stuff was what vandoren had mixed with black for a swirl pattern. The mp you have is probably a desirable item for some collectors.

I have a woodwind C7 that I bought used back about 60 years ago to play with my Selmer CT. That was when I was in the Indiana University Music School. Recently, Tom Ridenour refaced the mpc for me and it plays great.
