The new Selmer Privilege Bb & A

So after browsing the Selmer.fr site I see that the new Privilege is only being offered pitched in A-442, does anyone know if Selmer has plans to offer this horn pitched in A-440? Can a simple barrel change compensate for this?

A barrel change would be able to compensate for it. At the very worst you might have to have a special one made...but that would just be an opportunity to buy a barrel from Alan Segal.

Ed Palanker is also playing these horns right now, so you might send him an email.

Oh, ok I thought Mr. Palanker was playing the Signature line, he may have just the answer for my question though!

Patrick...now that you say it I'm completely wrong (for the third time this week!!!). Mr. Palanker plays the Signature series...I don't know what I was thinking.

IMO companies shouldn't claim a specific pitch for an instrument and players should stop making a big deal about it when they do. As mentioned on one maker's website (Peter Eaton) an instrument doesn't have a specific pitch until it is with a specific player and mouthpiece. As he says, you can see a good example of this in the book Clarinet.

Excuse me for making a "big deal" about it I was unaware of this but, thanks for clearing everything up for me. I sure am glad this is a clarinet bboard where information regarding all things clarinet is meant to be exchanged.

The opinion in this thread is of my own and in no way reflects the opinion of the 1st Armored Division Band or the United States Army.

On the other hand, I have a Buffet with an "F" prefix serial number, allegedly pitched for "French" A =442, and its scale, tuned to 440 is just awful! The horn came with a silly cardboard gauge that is supposed to validate the mouthpiece volume. Its a mouthpiece bore sized strip that pokes into the mouthpiece with a limit line that is supposed to assure you that, if the line aligns with the bottom of the mouthpiece tenon, it will bring the clarinet into tune at 442.

Test and try before you buy.

Sorry, I didn't mean to tell you (or anyone) not to make a "big deal" about it. I guess it's language berrier which a lot of times sounds different than what I meant. I was just recommending to not give this claim by companies too much significance. I think in many countries including mine people need to play both 440 and 442 on the same instrument.
