 Stolen Clarinets - Toronto
Author: Gregory Williams
Date:   2008-08-05 23:23

Dear List,

I don't know if this is the appropriate place to post this on the Bulliten Board, but I'll trust that Mark or Glen can re-file this if necessary.

My set of Buffet R-13's were stolen from the Lobby of Le Meridien King Edward Hotel in Downtown Toronto this morning...If anyone happens upon instruments matching the description below, I'd be happy to know about it.

Both R-13 Clarinets with Silver Keys

Serial Numbers
Bb 504815
A 355942
The Clarinets were in a Bam Trekking Double Case with a number of Vandoren Mouthpieces, a Kaspar Chicago or Cicero, crummy reeds, etc, etc.

Thanks,

Greg Williams
Minnesota Orchestra

I hope you find them! Finding great R-13s is such a hassle...

I feel for you Greg. That is very unfortunate and I hope you are able to find them, or that someone will turn them in to you.

The crappiest part about this sittuation is that even if he, or anyone else who has had instruments stolen for that matter, does get some sort of compensation will not be able to get instruments that were like those that they lost not to mention other things like older mouthpieces, etc.

You might want to give a call to the University of Toronto Music Department and ask the clarinet teachers/students there to keep an eye out.

Hi Greg,

I am so sorry to hear that this happened to you. (specially in Canada!)

If you need to borrow a pair of Clarinets, some mouthpieces and even a GOOD reed or two....give me a call, or email, and I will send some out right away that you can borrow until you find yours or figure out what to do.

Greg, alert the following dealers in the Toronto area:

Long & McQuade - Bloor St. Talk to Greg Eskins in the band department. He can also alert their stores across Canada

Gary Armstrong Woodwinds

Cosmo Music

St. John's Music

These places are the primary wind instrument dealers in Toronto, and do see things like this from time to time.

Make sure to file a report with the Toronto Police Service as well.

Good luck!

Greg,

The hotel could also have surveillance video which could help in identifying the people who absconded with your clarinets…

Thought I'd post some ideas to help:

Contact the hotel and have them contact the guests who may have been in the hotel around the time the clarinets were stolen. Also get them to look at security video for suspicious activity around the time they were stolen.

Get the police to look out for them. The non emergency number for Toronto police is 416 808 2222.

Let also York University Faculty of Music--Phone # (416) 736-5186
and Humber College (416) 675-6622 extension: 3427 or 3414 .

Inform the Royal Conservatory of Music. Their number is: (416) 408 2825

Get it in the news.major TV stations in Toronto are:

CITY TV 416 591 5757
CTV 416 332 5200
Canwest Global 416 446 5311

I have also posted a note to my facebook page and a lot of the relevant groups that I'm in. Let Wholenote Magazine know they can be reached at 416 323 2232.

I hope all my efforts help him get his clarinets back.

Meri

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for the good wishes and advice...I have filled out a police report with the Toronto Police Department and I'm told the hotel camera had a pretty clear video of the suspect, which they are sharing with the police. The instruments were fortunately fully insured through my work, so that is the one positive on the situation...I just thought I'd put the serial numbers on the list in case they turn up at a pawn shop, or are offered to someone in the next little while.

Luckily I have a backup at home,

Greg Williams

Update:

I am extremely happy to report that my clarinets stolen in Toronto, CANADA in 2008 have been returned to me by Chubb Insurance in Minneapolis, MN. Special thanks to Neil Trainor at Dolliff Insurance in St. Louis Park, MN, Chubb Insurance, and to the Toronto Police Department, 51 division, major crimes department - team 3.

I wanted to report an update so that if the clarinets come up for sale in the future by Chubb, or myself, there is a record of their recovery on this thread. I will decide in the next few weeks if I will keep the instruments.

Thanks,

Greg Williams
Minnesota Orchestra

Returned:
Bb 504815
A 355942
Bam Case

Wow, I'm so pleased you got them back after so long.

What did you do in the meantime?

Excellent news! Did recovery of the clarinets include catching the thief?

Hi Lelia,

The thief was not found, unfortunately. Vanessa, the clarinets were fully insured at replacement cost, so I purchased a new set in 2008. I now need to decide if I want to purchase the old horns back from the insurance company, and if so, we need to agree on a price. I wanted to update the thread in case the clarinets come up for sale in the future. If someone searches the serial numbers, the original post from 2008 would be amended.

Greg
