Happened to a different military band than the one I was on, but it does suck. If I remember correctly, the sousaphone player's jaw was broken.

Whoa... How come the band didn't see him and move away? The parachute looks pretty noticeable to me.. Man, that totally sucks. I hope the people who got injured recover.. That's way worse than TMJ o__o

When a millitary band is preforming a ceremony they are standing at the position of attention, with their head and eyes straight forward. Movement is not allowed in this position, the parachutist was probably out of their line of sight. It also said that he hit into the band at over 50 mph, that's moving pretty quickly.

They were standing easy, but still they have to face straight ahead for any instructions.

Had that been a full band, the clarinets would have copped it: http://www.royalmarinesbands.co.uk/reference/FS_bandformations.htm

Never before have I seen a sousaphone fly.

Or broken in half for that matter.

"Never before have I seen a sousaphone fly."

I've seen a horse fly!

Problem with sousaphones is that they're worn by the player, so if they do get taken out in this or similar manner the player will get taken with them instead of them being dropped (although tubas and saxes are supported by a belt or a sling so that could also be to the player's disadvantage), so it's easy to see how the player got his jaw broken considering the impact and weight of both the parachutist and sousaphone being pulled away from him. One of the trumpets can be seen sent flying too, but at least the player could let go.

Sousaphone bells are detachable (held on by three large locking screws) so they can fit into a case.
