Hey guys, do you know of any method of safely removing the purpleish/shiny coating buffet adds to new clarinets?
Parts of my instrument wheres there's little activity still has it on while other parts especially in the lower joint don't... It looks strange and to begin with I absolutely hate the look of the coating.

Washing the instrument might remove it, then oiling to make it black again. On some of those clarinets they put the coat because the wood isn't very consistent so just be ready for that if you remove it. Also some soaps (depending on how much you scrub) will remove some logos, so be careful with that.

I have a couple of spots on my Buffet too.
I just tried- nail polis remover, paint thinner, super glue remover, and lighter fluid. All were totally ineffective.
I wonder if it may be a heat cured coating.
??? hmmm...

I now reread my post and realized it sounded theoretical. Actually I have purposely removed it recently by washing with dish soap and scrubing. The Buffet I did this to is from a few (maybe five) years ago so I don't know if the finish is different on newer ones.

Use isopropyl alcohol or methylated spirits, plenty of cotton rags (old cotton T-shirts will do fine) and you should be able to remove the purple dye (as it's an alcohol based dye they used). Then oil and buff the joints afterwards with a clean cotton cloth.
