 fingering charts transposed?
Author: greenhorn_33

Hi,
Forgive me for asking this rather stupid question, but do the notes on the fingering charts in this site stand for the real notes played, or do they need to be transposed by a whole note lower? I know I should be able to find this out by
playing the notes on a piano, but the one I have is a midi based one I downloaded for my 'puter, that makes a thin sound I can hardly tune to. In case it may be relevant, I am using an Albert-sys Bb with 2 1/2 reeds.

thanks,

Carlos

Carlos,

To quote the fingering chart, "Basic Fingering Chart for Oehler- and Albert-System Clarinet . . . This fingering chart includes the primary fingerings learned by all clarinetists. These fingerings apply to all sizes of Oehler- and Albert-system clarinets unless specified otherwise."

You do not need to transpose.

Well, the fingering charts give that pitch _as written_ for the clarinet. The pitches WILL NOT match the corresponding keyboard pitch.

In other words, if you put down your left thumb, index, middle and ring fingers on their holes, you will sound a "Clarinet C." If you have a Bb clarinet, this "Clarinet C" will sound like a Bb on the piano (one step lower).

Clarinet parts are typically written with the transposition in mind, but if you play most non-classical or non-jazz music, you may need to transpose the notes to match other instruments.
