 Tuning the nosebleeds.

So, just for kicks and giggles, I decided to try the principal clarinet part of Strauss' "Alpine Symphony." Alpine is pretty fun. Almost as much as it is difficult. The difficulty not only lies in the fact that it's in Deutsch and in cut time but also the fact that it goes up to the highest C written on clarinet, and then descends in a perfect C scale run.

Other than fingerings, the one deterrent was how grossly out of tune I sounded, because I'm not used to going up that high.

So, any advice on playing in tune that high?

Practice with a tuner comes immediately to mind..........and at least four slow counts per note--not "impress all who listen" speed.

I’ve never played the first part but have done the 3rd and bass part, which is mostly 3rd clarinet in C. I do it on my Bb clarinet and it is in the same register as the first part but often in unison with the flutes and piccolo. What you need to do is to experiment with different fingerings to find what works best on your clarinet-mouthpiece combination and than work carefully with a tuner one or two notes at a time. It is most important that you find the best fingerings first, with a couple of alternates for facility. Anytime we do that in the BSO my lip is shot for days.
