repertoire for clarinet and mezzo voice
Author: tetiana

Can someone steer me to any repertoire for clarinet and mezzo soprano voice, possibly with piano accompaniment?

Thanks for your help. (I tried to use the data base elsewhere on the site, but found it tough sledding).

Hello,
Check www.clarinet.org for ICA lending library. You'll have to be a member to check anything out, but it's worth it!

Hi.

I have the good fortune to also play with this combination and here's the repertoire that we've tried. All pieces are for clarinet, mezzo, and piano. Please note that my editorial comments are those of strictly amateur performers.

"When daises pied" by Thomas Arne (Emerson Edition) -- clarinet obligato by Henry Lazarus; edited by Pamela Weston
[very pretty and none of the parts are difficult]

"Song of the shepherd Lell" from the "Snow Maiden" by Kimsky-Korsakov (Fentone Music) -- transcribed by Pamela Weston
[nice piece and not hugely difficult, but lengthy solo clarinet opening and closing sections]

"Parto parto" aria from "La Clemenza di Tito" by Mozart
[none of the parts are easy in my opinion]

"The Sea-bird" by Roger Quilter -- arranged by Michael Waters
[very nice and none of the parts are overly difficult]

"Sechs deutsche Lieder" by Louis Spohr (Barenreiter)
[very beautiful but none of the parts are easy in my opinion]

And the mezzo I work with has a high enough tessitura that she can sing Schubert's "Shepherd on the Rock".

We also have the following that were recommended as being very nice, but have not yet tried them:

"Romanze, die Verschworenen" by Schubert -- arranged by Fritz Spiegl (Oxford University Press)

"Recitative and Aria Ich bin allein" from "Faust" by Louis Spohr (Nova Music)

Hope that helps,
Diana

Some of the works suggested by Diana may be too high for a mezzo-soprano. One piece written for a true mezzo is "Non piu di fiori" by Mozart. The obbligato was originally written for basset-horn, but the piano arrangement also contains a clarinet version.

Thank you very much for this input. Ben I tried that site (I became a member of ICA a couple of months ago) but found it really hard to navigate. But now that I have some repertoire in mind, I'll definitely explore the lending option. Thanks.
