He's one of the top Rom (gypsy) clarinetists in Turkey, has a few cd's out with his group Laco Tayfa- those tend to be a little fusiony. The piece he's playing is called "Harmandali", it's a well-known zeybek, which is a 9/4 rhythm common in both Greece and Turkey. He plays some gorgeous less-synthesized stuff that I once saw on a bootleg dvd... would love to hear more of that.

He's playing an Albert system G clarinet, which is the common clarinet for doing non-Western music. Turkish music divides a whole step into 9ths (yes, seriously), which might account for it sounding different than other clarinet music you've heard before.

Wow thanks! I really liked his playing, but I'm not sure I would want to hear it all the time. But I loved how the audience reacted to him! Great stuff!

Check out the other clips by this player in the series. And I think he's using a blown-out Rovner too.

Good grief,
I'd barely listened to the first three or four notes when I detected that "blown-out Rovner." Give me a break! Could we just retire the term "blown out?" It's ridiculous enough to apply the term to clarinets........now we're applying it to ligatures. What's next? "blown-out" cork grease....."blown-out" thumb rests......."blown-out" pad worms?
Rant, rant, rant. (I must be getting "blown-out." I turn 65 next year.

It's kind of nice to hear something different or, at least, new as opposed to the "same old-same old" all the time--although it did take a while to really start to appreciate the style and talent involved. Great playing.......
