Hi.. can anyone tell me how many clarinets are needed for Beauty & The Beast? 1 clarinetist on sop/bs cl or 2 clarinetists, one playing clar 1 and one playing clar 2 and bass clarinet?
Thanks much

Bret Pimentel's site http://www.bretpimentel.com/doubling/shows/ lists this as the WW doubles for Beauty and the Beast:
1: Piccolo, flute
2: Oboe, English horn
3: Flute, clarinet, bass clarinet
So that's one player, playing clarinet, bass clarinet AND flute.

Check out MTI's site, it's the "medium" size orchestrations for tours:
http://www.mtishows.com/show_instrumentation.asp?ID=000262
When I did it on Broadway, as a sub for my former student, KeriAnn DiBari, the orchestration had 5 woodwind books:
Reed 1: Flute, Piccolo
Reed 2: Oboe, EH
Reed 3: Clarinet, Flute
Reed 4: Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Flute, Piccolo
Reed 5: Bassoon, Contra
I don't believe they use that large a woodwind section on any of their tours.
When I did the movie for Disney, the woodwind section was even larger, but that's what the composer and orchestrator requested, in order to make the movie the big hit it is still today.
Good luck with your book, it's a lot to play, but great fun!

I'm doing this in Perth soon, its definitely Flute/Clarinet/Bass clarinet. Gotta brush up on my flute skills as most of it is tricky, doubling the piccolo and all that.
