 E11 problem
Author: Swede

Hi,
I've just bought a buffet E11 as a backup (new 2004) to my C12 (wich is superb !!) , unfortunately it appears to be
problems with the lower register, which is very sharp >>> . Is there anything to do about this problem ?

Unfortunately, i sold my older E11 (from about 1985) wich definitley had a much better keywork than this "crap" newer model.
Someone who knows when they change this to be worse.... ?
The older E11 has buffet logo engraved, but this seems to just been stamped with golden colour ?

Thanks
Dan

You do realize that the E11 comes with a 64.5mm barrel and is designed to play at A=442.

Yes i now it's 442 but the problem is that it plays A=444, i pulled the barrel
out quite a bit to get 442, but the chalumeau register A3 and lower is still sharp (Altissimo is good). Seems to be register to register intonation problem with this one ?

Thanks
Dan

I disagree.

The E11 from the mid 80s were crap and were much improved around 1993.

Don't focus on the cheap logo, and get a 66 mm barrel.

I saw a few (I think three) E11s in the last year and although they weren't as good as the better models they were very decent with pretty good sound and intonation.

What made the mid-80's E11s crap? What changes were made in the 90's models to solve the problems?

Best regards,
jnk

For a while they were coming with joints that didn't fit. That got resolved when they started silver playing them. It wasn't of course the plating, but they changed some of the features then.

Plastic A key pin was a BAD change though.....

The newer models were less stuffy too. I liked the wood also from the mid 90s too.

And man did they make some dumb choices with the cases!! (black plastic one with the swinging hinge locks). Seemed good but were cheaply made.

Honestly, I can say that the E11, if you're a good beginner, or advancing student, is a great clarinet, it took me so far, but as you get to a certain point, it becomes a hindrance. I'd get a new barrel. Or clarinet. After a while, the instrument will start getting sharper and sharper, and in your case, you'll really struggle to play in tune.

At least, that's my experience, and I get mine tuned-up every six months.

Btw, that's the clarinet that I used to suggest for my students to buy for their 1st clarinet after renting. Now its only if they can afford it...

When I started teaching they were only $325 at WWBW. The YCL 34 was also a favorite for the period when the barrels were way too tight (wood, not cork).

Now that leblanc has the bliss models out, will be interesting to compare.

Thanks for your comments. All notes are now in tune (when the barrel is pulled out 4 mm), except for the lowest tone E3 wich is 20-25 cent sharp ?
I swapped the lower joint with my C12 and then E3 is fine !. This means
that there is someting wrong with the E11 lower joint ...

Is there anything more to do about it, enlarge the bore or something ?

Thanks
Dan
