 Clarinettino (Chalumeau) Ripamonti
Author: giuliano

Hello all,

I have found that the Italian firm L.A. Ripamonti produces a "Clarinettino" (Chalumeau) in C, you can see it in their site:

http://www.laripamonti.com//ecommerce/product_info.php?cPath=81&products_id=148

I have never seen anything similar before, and I wonder whether that's a true Chalumeau or not.

What about fingerings? It looks very similar to a recorder, no?

It uses a Bb mouthpiece, by the way.

Any other info would be highly appreciated, especially regarding repertoire, I'm very curious about what can be played with it.

I doubt this is a 'proper' chalumeau as they come in the same sizes as recorders do and in effect look like a recorder to but with a singler reed and mouthpiece.

There are quite a few pieces of repertoire including concertos by Fasch and Hoffmeister as well as orchestral uses by Vivaldi, Rameau etc.

TKS, S G, how interisting ! XaPHoons seem to be available from Amazon, Lark in the Morning, Hammacher-Schl. etc under this name or Pocket Sax/Clarinet, likely [from prices] more of a novelty than a "true" musical inst. A sax version ?sounds? interesting, using a "tenor sax reed and 2 octave range". ? Any experience, anyone ?? Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

Thanks Peter!

Compared to a proper Chalumeau, the only difference seems to be the bell...

Regarding repertoire, if a Chalumeau is actually a recorder with a clarinet mouthpiece, then perhaps anything written for the recorder can be played on it?

The Xaphoon is another thing I've never seen before, thanks for mentioning:

But look at the hole positions, which seem more "clarinetistic" in the Xaphoon than in the Clarinettino.

A chalumeau is not "a recorder with a clarinet mouthpiece"; or at any rate, the early 18th chalumeau was not -- it had two keys, roughly corresponding to the clarinet's throat A and B-flat keys, though the latter did not serve as a register key. It was played mostly in the bottom register, therefore, giving it a smaller compass than a recorder -- so, no, "anything written for the recorder" would not necessarily be suitable for chalumeau.

The Ripamonti instrument lacks the two keys, so would have an even smaller compass. It might be a fun novelty instrument, but apparently very limited -- certainly not anything I'd pay 126 Euros for.

Guntram Wolf makes several basic clarinets (mostly open holes, but with a speaker key) for youngsters to learn on.

There's a Jupiter version as well as the Hohner one.
