Am I mistaken or is this a picture of Reginald Kell holding a pipe? http://www.amazon.com/Swing-Low-Sweet-Clarinet-Reginald/dp/B000AYYTQW

So, David, you agree that it's a pipe he is holding?

What's the point of many of these threads? I am curious, that's all.

It is a pipe but what's the difference? A lot of wind players smoked in those days. When I joined the BSO in 63 the entire clarinet section smoked, and that included Iggy Genussa. He smoked like a chimney. I stopped when I was about 25, the others also stopped a few years later, Iggy retired but never did stop as far as I know. So again, is there a point to this or just curiosity? ESP

I think this is a matter of different generations and times. Smoking was very common back when. Kids smoked, and they werent gangsters either. I can only imagine if he had mistaken his clarinet for his pipe.

Ah, testing for leaks was so much easier then...

Not only was testing for leaks easier, but breaking in reeds was easier.
The tar helped to seal the pores in the reeds during break in.
I have to burnish the reeds more since I've stopped smoking.

Not a pipe!
An early Backun tuning barrel for an English Horn. Made of Yambezzi wood.

It could be worse. It could have been a special neck for an alto clarinet. [rotate]

Best regards,

Yeh, it could be a pioneer Bakun tuning barrel...at only $600!

The pipe is interesting, but the real grabber about this disc is that it may be the only recording in existence of that legendary performer BBC Acetate! ;)

It's clearly a left-hand E/B key. You get the rest of the clarinet when you buy the record.
