 Concerto Arrangements for Wind Band
Author: JenniferMendez

I am hoping to get some suggestions about concertos already arranged for wind ensemble. My school does not have an orchestra program, so we must have a pre-arranged choice to be eligible for competition this fall. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks! Jen

Many of the standard repertoire pieces for clarinet and orchestra, or clarinet and piano have since been arranged for clarinet and band.

The problem is that they are increasingly difficult to find (some have gone out of print) and many have become quite expensive to purchase.

There have been arrangements done of the different Weber Concerti and Concertino, the Mozart Concerto, and standard solos by Cavallini, Messager, Rossini, Andre-Bloch, Lefebvre, Spohr and even the Poulenc Sonata. (I'm probably leaving out quite a few others)

Their effectiveness varies with the individual arrangement/arranger.

As we've also recently discussed there are different choices in the transcription of K.622 for wind ensemble. The Rondo movement only (arranged by Casteel/Kendor Music) or full arrangements by Robert W. Rumbelow (Alfred Music) or Hunsberger should all still be available.

...GBK (who still has a fondness for Morrisey's "Interlude" for clarinet and band)

BTW - For a lighter change of pace, I recently heard the famous Alfred Reed concert band / alto sax arrangement of "Harlem Nocturne" performed by a clarinetist using an A clarinet.

A pretty clever idea, since it put the solo clarinet part into Eb major/C minor and the darker A clarinet tone color worked nicely with the band...GBK

Apropos of this - Earle Hagen just passed away a few days ago.

I think Gordon Jacob both wrote and arranged several concertos for clarinet and concert band or clarinet choir.

The opinions I express are my own.

There's always the Rimsky-Korsakov Concerto, written for clarinet and band. Unfortunately, it's rather dreadful music.

Principal Clarinetist of the West Point Band John Parrette did an arrangement of the Mozart Clarinet Concerto for Wind Ensemble. I haven't seen it, but would assume that it's quite good .

Available in Bb and A - similar instrumentation to the Gran Partita.

Guy Woolfenden is a whizz with the windband and arranged his own concerto for winds. If memory serves it's just the last movement, but it's still substantial.

Edit: it becomes the Rondo Variations when it's with winds.

if you have another clarinetist you can play with, the krommer double concerto no. 1 is great and not too difficult.
