 Doctor Appointment!!
Author: Neal Raskin

Hey everyone, I am going to see an ears, nose, and throat specialist today because of a recent bout of air leak through my nose. I've read pretty much every article I could find. But I am still going in to try and get some answers.

I'll update this post once I know more.

Good luck Neal!

Hey, do you use a lot of nosespray?
That and or a dieviated septum could maybe cause that.

I'll be really interested to know what the doctor says, I've experienced this in the past and put it down to general tiredness and I was playing ALL DAY every day at the time. I believe there's a very long and difficult word for this?

Well, I just got back from my appointment, as it turns out, this doctor specializes with the voice. So he didn't have too much to say. He's putting me in contact with a palate specialist.

He also recommended doing some research and finding a doctor that specializes in this for performers. So.... does anyone know of a doctor who specializes in this problem?

I've done some research reading articles about this. My clarinet professor and I have come to the conclusion that it happens under these circumstances:
1. extreme pressure buildup in the throat
2. dry throat/nose
3. cold tempurature
4. bad breathing technique

I've been on a breathing regimen that has eliminated most of this problem. Though I still went to the doctor today to gain more insight..(can't wait to see this insurance bill.. ;)

Can anyone shed more light on this issue? I've already done the search feature and found some good posts. Is there anything more? David, what is the nosespray you're talking about? and what is it used for??

Neal

Long term use of nosespray can really mess up nasal area - Swiss cheese as an ENT described it.

That's good.

There's an ENT in Philadelphia who's specialty is Musicians. His name is

Robert Sataloff , MD
Voice Foundation
1721 Pine St
Philadelphia, PA 19103
Phone: (215) 545-3322
Fax: (215) 790-1192

They could most likely give you a name of someone in your region who has a similar specialty.

About nose sprays....as I remember, the "swiss cheese" effect on the septum is more associated with prescription steroid nasal sprays than with things like nasonex or nasalcrom. Someone brought up deviated septum, which I have, but I don't think I've had an air leak. I do feel a lot of pressure in there sometimes, and mucus buildup when I'm playing, but I can usually deal with it well enough.

Nasonex won't do that at all. It's the over the counter sprays such as Afrin which can really do a lot of damage over long periods of time.

I use Nasonex nightly - had briefly started doing Afrin, but my Doc said no way.

I have the exact same problem and wehn I researched it, my symptoms seemed to point at a Velopharyngeal Stress Incompetence. I never have had it checked out because I haven't decided if I want to make a career out of music, but through talking with a specialist, they were almost sure that that was the problem. The Solution: Lipoinjection of the soft palate. Doesn't sound like fun, but it's been successful. Hope the info helps!

From experience I and people close to me have found nasal sprays to be bad for the nose and for the heart. The only safe one is a saline spray. I was addicted to Neo-Synephrine for a long time and my wife to Afrin in what was a painful and difficult addiction to break.
