Try Smart Music. It exists on there and you can choose your tempo along with breathing and a lot of other really interesting features.

It existed on LP - I have a copy. It was one of MMO's late recordings, when the production values had declined. The pianist and cellist play well but you can hear someone washing dishes and even a baby crying and a phone ringing in the background.

No, the Brahms Trio doesn't exist on SmartMusic.

Hello,

I'm extremely displeased with Music Minus One's product. The few I've purchased are unusable, the string players veer severely off pitch and, since there is nothing visual nor aural to indicate tempo changes, the massive tempo changes that are on the discs prove to be insurmountable.

I use Smart Music, which has a lot of accompaniments on it, but not the Brahms Trio, unfortunately. The people at Smart Music assure me that if it's for personal use only, it is legal to create a new Smart Music accompaniment of any composition by reentering the score into Finale, then converting it to Smart Music. I haven't tried this yet, but probably will when I have some time to play around.

It also seems that the people at Smart Music don't have plans to add any new pro level accompaniments, but to rather focus on the educational aspect of their program, which is rather impressive. However, since I don't teach, I would prefer that they expand their pro level accompaniments. It all comes down to money and I'm sure the educational component pays much better!

Live is always better.

Though some MMO sound barely alive....

Smart Music accompaniments are synthesized, not quite like the MMO concept, imho, and although the so called "human playback" in Finale, which I suppose is what's under Smart Music (I'm unsure about this, does anyone knows anything about it?), has been vastly improved, it's not quite like playing with real humans.

Good for school children, but not for advanced amateurs, imho again.

Having said that, I'm sorry to hear that many MMO products are of inferior quality, the two I have (Brahms sonatas and quintet) seem fairly good to me.

I often play jazz gigs with an alto saxophonist and drummer, both who recorded albums and did session work for MMO in the 60's.

Even though their recordings are still being offered on the MMO web site, they are STILL waiting to get paid... GBK

I'm a clinician for them. Some accomps are live played, others are synthised. Not all piano accomps are synthetic.

All band accomps are live with bands such as the US navy and marine band in DC.!

Thanks---I have engraved a few band scores that will be available on Smart Music, but I didn't know they would use live recordings, thanks for pointing it out!

Oh yeah, most sound great, some sound like recorded in a school spring concert so hissy and or distant sounding.

Looking forward to hearing and using them!

Hello,

I practice with SmartMusic when I'm performing something that is in their catalog. It really does cut down on the learning curve. I can just get together with a pianist for 1 or 2 rehearsals before performing instead of more.

Looking back on my college and earlier times, if I had this resource when I was young, I would have practiced much more!

A couple of years back I bought the Brahms Quintet from MMO, just for practice as I thought it a good way to learn all the parts as well as a bit of fun.
It arrived in a flashy booklet with CD attached.....and sounded AWFUL!

The 'click in' sounded like someone banging a ring on the inside of a metal bath tub and the quality of the recording sounded as if it was done in a damp basement on wax paper on a phonograph cylinder directed by thomas Edision himself around the mid 1870's!!

Listening carefully, the actual playing isnt too bad at all, its the quality of the recording that was terrible, and for $30 I thought was a bit of a cheek.

I emailed MMO and told them what I thought. Their reply? "Hmm sorry about that, not very good is it? Actually I think it might well have been done in a basement many years ago!" - they then offered me a $30 credit to spend! ...quite remarakable.......

Ben

Ps: having just checked the new MMO website I see that the SAME recording is still for sale! £30!

The MMO Brahms Quintet LP is pitched for Bb clarinet. Presumably they recorded it at the original pitch and then cut the record a half step higher. Fortunately, my turntable speed is variable and I got it back to the original pitch, where the strings sound perfectly natural.

I had no trouble with the record otherwise, though Brahms wrote constantly in syncopated rhythms, so it's not easy to stay with the recording.

This is one of the early MMO recordings, when they used better players. It's far from perfect, but it's much better than nothing.

"It's far from perfect, but it's much better than nothing."

For $30 I would argue that it isn't....
