Is a bell for A clarinet different than one for a Bb?

If so,how are they different?

On the R13, the bell for the A clarinet is slightly longer ...GBK

It was only when I had a pair come to me for some work that I realised the bells are different lengths.

The only other clarinets I've seen this on are B&H 1010 where the A has the longer bell.

The amount of the choke (the reduction in the size of the bore at the top of the bell) is also different for the Bb and A R-13 clarinets. The bells are thus not interchangeable.

Thank you all.

I have one more question.

If you use Bb bell on A clar,is it noticeably different?

The next time you're sitting around with another clarinetist with an R13 Bb bell...switch and see what you think. (Switching bells of same "species").

There can be a great deal of difference. Perhaps your Bb would sound better with an A bell? Maybe!

My friend uses a backun bell and interchanges on his Bb and A clarinet, though he has some teflon tape wrapped around the lower joint to prevent the discrepancy when switching. so there isn't much of a difference, just have to adjust the tenon corks so that the bell is interchangeable. no sense in dropping another 4 bills for another bell. At this point, your pretty much micromanaging
