I was just wondering if anyone's clarinet has ever given them a mark on the lip that looks like a bruise. I've had this for maybe a year or so. I haven't played the clarinet for about a month, to see if it would go away but it hasn't. You'd think if it were a bruise it would be gone by now. Maybe a varicose vein?

Possibly something like that, though I'd suggest you go and see your GP if it's really bothering you.
I've got nodules on the inside of my bottom lip, they're not painful or annoying, but they've only developed since I began playing and have remained the same for the last 15 years or so.

I had something like that a few years ago. It turned out to be a blood blister that took a long time to clear up. But you should get it checked by your doctor so that you can stop worrying about it.

Your suggestion of "varicose vein" is close to the mark. You probably have damaged the wall of a vein, which has become thin and bulged out. If you do not continue to irritate it, it should resolve in a month or two. I have experienced this myself, and seen it in other people in my medical practice.
However, if it continues to concern you, see your own doctor.

Thanks for your replies. I'll probably see a doctor since I don't want to damage it any further, but in the meantime I'm researching old threads on decreasing lip pressure. There's so much information here it's wonderful!
