Spohr 3rd Concerto - help with parts
Author: cigleris

Hi Everyone

I'm doing Spohr's 3rd concerto on the 29th and 30th May and need help in finding the parts. The conductor who i'm working with has had no luck in LA and for some reason the orchestra's libarian (Philharmonic of Sibiu, Romania) can't get them either and from the sounds of it they are not prepared to hire.

Does anyone have a set that they would be willing to lend?

Thanks in advance

Stanley Drucker has performed the Spohr #3 several times with the NY Philharmonic, so they undoubtedly have the parts. The question is whether they will lend them out.

Great concerto -- the best of the four, I think.

The performance is in 3 weeks, and not only has the orchestra not started rehearsing, they don't even have a plan in place to acquire the material? I'm like WTF? Surely this can't be Standard Operating Procedure at the pro level. Or can it?

The work is rentable from G. Schirmer. Perhaps you could rent the material yourself and add the cost thereof to your fee? Or would that be a deal-breaker?

for a piece like this the orchestra would only need one, maybe two sessions in the week before the concert. English orchestra are famous for performing (to a very high standard) with NO rehearsals.

Davyd, my reply was just the same as yours. A professional orchestra book a professional soloist and conductor and then turn round and say that they can't get parts is frankly laughable. Any how I have some leads to Germany thanks to Michael Collins and the Swedish Chamber Orchestra who have just recorded all the concertos.

Donald I wish I was doing it here as it would be all sorted and I could just turn up for 2 sessions and do the concerts but alas it's Sibiu, Romania and they obviously do things differently.

Just another episode in the life of a professional musician.

"alas it's Sibiu, Romania and they obviously do things differently"

Indeed they do. When I was there in 2006 they seemed to be renovating half the buildings in the historic centre simultaneously. Hotel rooms were hard to find - they were either being rebuilt or were being used by builders.

But the parts they'd finished renovating were beautiful. It was worth a visit then; it should be glorious now. There are pictures on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sibiu and http://www.sibiu.ro/index_en.php, but they don't do it justice.
