Gliere - Four Pieces For (Basset) Horn...
Author: Chris P

I heard a recording of Gliere's 'Four Pieces for Horn' and wonder if it's feasable if played on basset horn (and adding an extra word to the title, but not taking anything away from it).

Neither having a recording (which isn't listed at amazon.co.uk, though it is on amazon.com for US customers) nor the sheet music, I'm wondering just how much of it is in the throat area (and the overall range - if it doesn't go below written B below the treble clef for an F instrument, then it could be played on cor anglais too. Still preserving the 'horn' motif).

Can't help I'm afraid... just an association of ideas... don't hear the name Gliere often. Have a transposition of Gliere 'cello duets for bass clt and bassoon. RT

Interesting, might it be suitable for all of these differing-tonality reed insts, perhaps including even my alto clarinet?? Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

I'll see if I can get the dots for it on Wedneday - our new band instructor is a horn player (as was the last) and he's got a crate full of horn music, so maybe that'll be in there too. If not, I'll order it.

I assume it should be playable on alto clarinet, or even alto sax - though on the latter it really depends on how low the horn part goes (same with cor anglais). Here's the info of the version played on the radio the other night:

Title: 4 Pieces For Horn and Piano
Composer: Reinhold Gliere
Soloist: Marie Luise Neunecker and Paul Rivinius
Record Label: Koch
Catalogue Number: 313572

Just used the catalogue number and found the Gliere listed in the UK (Amazon), and very reasonably priced (though horrendously expensive to buy used) even though it's being shipped from the US:

But well overpriced for US buyers!:
