Does anyone know anything about the reputation of the Carnegie Mellon Clarinet Studio? I'm trying to make my decision where to attend college and I'm really taking a liking to that place. My problem is I'm not very sure of the reputation. Any comments would be great! Thank you.

Michael Rusinek is a very demanding teacher from what I understand. If given the opportunity to study with him, I'd definitely do it. I'm sure you'd gain a great deal from it. They have an outstanding faculty in other instruments as well, so you'd likely have some great students alongside you. Do a google search on their alumni and you'll find some significant successes. I would, as I always do in these cases, caution you against going into significant debt for your study.

I would most likely be studying with Thomas Thompson. Do you know anything about him?

Hi Audrey,
I have heard some really good things about Michael Rusinek.
If on the off chance you wanted to switch to the Bagpipes, Alistair Gilles is the best piper in the world...

I went to Duquesne University which is down the street from Carnegie Mellon. I'd highly advise you not to go into debt for your degree. CMU is a very expensive school. Have you gotten money from them?
I studied with Michael Rusinek for 3 of my 4 years at Duquesne. He is a very demanding teacher. He's tough on his students! But everyone I know who's studied with him and has listened to what he says has a top notch sound, great technique, pays great attention to detail, etc. etc. etc.! If you want more info, email me. Good luck!
