I think I met the oldest professional clarinetist. One of my "retirement" jobs is that of usher/ticket taker for the Cleveland Indians. We have a Dixieland band that plays at some of the games. Last week I struck up a conversation with clarinetist.
Here is what I learned: He is 90 years old. He studied with Daniel Bonade,former principal with the Cleveland Orchestra (and Philadelphia).
When I asked him what brand of clarinet he related that Bonade picked it up for him during his summer trips to France. (Bonade didn't play the summer season.
Ironically,he studied with Bonade at the Hruby Conservatory (a 'community' music studio). I now teach clarinet (sax,flute, and piano) in this same building, now an historical building. Small world.

Hey, that's neat! Thanks for sharing. Bonade's influence on the American School of clarinet playing is far-reaching, indeed. I'd be hard-pressed to find a born-and-raised professional American clarinetist who didn't study with Bonade himself or one of his disciples or who wasn't influenced in some way by him. I used to work at the ICA Research Center at University of Maryland where Bonade's personal papers are housed. Neat stuff there!

Apparently there's some statistical evidence that musicians live longer than average and stay mentally alert longer--and that's despite all those who've become infamous because they fried their brains on drugs.

Al Gallodoro, who will be 95 in June, is alive and well, teaching and performing several times a week. You might check out his site for surprise and awe! Some of us (hardly a man is now alive) have great memories of his 78 RPM recording of Chopin's Fantasy-Impromtu of 60 some years ago!

Gallodoro's Fantasie Impromptu (Chopin) can be heard on the "The Many Sides of Alfred Gallodoro, Volume I" CD which is available through his website, Amazon.com and Cdbaby.com (and probably elsewhere). He truly is a living legend.

I play with dixieland jammers in three Bay Area jazz clubs. There is a clarinet player who is 95 or 96 now, I forget which, his name is Grant Flemming. He used to have his own band many years ago. He is still doing great.
