I want to make reeds!!! Basics
Author: Ryder

Lets assume I buy reed blanks that only need to be profiled and trimmed. What are the essentials I need to finish the reed. I already have a reed clipper.

Oh...I should mention that I don't have the budget for a reed profiling machine, as much as I'd like... :(

The essentials are: a keen eye, good lighting, a reed knife for single reeds, a flat surface (like a table), and some form of instruction. A reed knife for single reeds is bevelled on one side, not both. I bought mine from T. G. Fackelman, 116 North Vine Street in Elkhart, Indiana 46514. I hope that this gentleman is alive and well. The form of instruction I have is Kalmen Opperman's book, called "Handbook for Making and Adjusting Single Reeds, published by Chapell & Co, Inc. RKO Building--Rockefeller Center, New York NY. I wouldn't be surprised if Chappell & Co is no more. The price my father paid for my book was $1.50! I'm sure that Ken Shaw or GBK or John Moses can supplement what I've set out and revise what's not relevant.

Best of luck to you. You'll learn a lot, ruin many blanks, and wonder, from time, why you ever undertook the project.

The Opperman book is now published by M. Baron Company, Inc.

It is available from numerous sources, including Van Cott Music:
