Adjustable Barrel - Why so special?
Author: Bill McK

I saw a couple of these adjustable barrels on Ebay lately go for $54 and $74. I have looked but have not been able to find out any history on them or why they might go at what appears to be a higher price than expected.

One listed a patent date of 1919 and this one was listed as a Conn barrel in their descriptions.

why so special? because they offer the versatility of correcting your pitch. In addition, they help anticipate what size barrel you will need to buy before buying the barrel, testing it out for intonation, and sending it back to get a longer one.

are a few adjustables that i know.

And with the slide type adjustable barrels, you don't get left with such a void when lengthened as you do with normal barrels when they're pulled out, leaving a gap between the top joint tenon and the inside of the lower barrel socket (though tuning rings fill in this gap).

Guy Chadash says that the gap is intentional. Go to http://test.woodwind.org/clarinet/BBoard/read.html?f=20&i=289&t=289 and search on the word gap.
