Has anyone recently done a Mouthpiece Survey among full time professional players?
Author: DavidBlumberg

Has anyone recently done a Mouthpiece Survey among full time professional players? Not to say just Classical, but players who make a living with playing. I'm not voluntering to do it, just wondering if it's out there...

I saw the one from 1994

I saw this listed earlier but don't know any more details about this book with regard to contributors (besides the author), and can't see what the sample pages say - though I assume it may be something along your lines of inquiry:

Surprise.......a lot of professionals have "GAS" too. I've seen Laura Ardan switch mouthpieces in the middle of a concert.

So the question more accurately is..."What mouthpiece, for what piece on which date?"

The book looks interesting, however I don't think that was what David was asking. But, good suggestion on the book.

Which one of his own mouthpieces does Greg Smith play?
Which one does Walter Grabner play?
Does Ricardo Morales really play a Backun/Morales? If so, which model?

Ricardos backun is modified and fairly similar to the B40 Vandoren facing (as told to me yesterday by another P.O. Clarinetist). Yes he plays Backun and did long before ever getting a penny or even a discount. Paid full price until joining the company and he had already bought dozens of barrels - Literally

--------------

In the CSO - always a Chedeville style number 1 facing.

Chamber music and solo repertoire - either a Chedeville style in Cocuswood or the same Chedeville style 1 facing in hard rubber.

Greg, I noticed your new model on your website. Is that the one you're using?

Yes Brenda. Until about the beginning of this year I had played the #1 facing for the last dozen years or so. The personal model evolved more or less over the last year until I felt comfortable playing it in the orchestra this last fall/winter.

How does the new Smith model differ from the previous one?

Ed -

The Chedeville style #1 facing is about as close to the old Charles Chedeville as one gets with my line of mouthpieces.

The dimensions in the facing and interior of the new "Personal" model differ enough to *help* make a new kind of sound possible for those interested. The description lies on my models page: http://www.gregory-smith.com/Models.html

Basically the facing feels like a Kaspar to me and that combined with the Chedeville-like interior *helps* blend and balance the playing characteristics of both mouthpiece styles.

On the page that Sherman linked there is a video of a Ricardo Morales, but not the Clarinetist Ricardo. Its somebody else with the same name.

No David, it is John Yeh of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Here is the listing again:

As he says, he plays the Van Doren M13 Lyre and has five of them and advises his students to play them as well.

Yes, saw that. The link was on that page for the Ricardo video.

I have a utube video, but its me doing 750 lbs on the super squat machine. Sometime will have to loose enough weight to want to put a video up.

User name is Blummy - did it for fun.

There are many players who use Vandoren and their students too. It was my pick for a while to suggest before I picked the Hite D.

I went to a mouthpiece/reed clinic with Ron Caravan and he said that he had collected a number of mouthpiece measurements (cl and sax) of playing professionals and professors over the years. Maybe he is a person to contact about this.

I used to have one in the woodwind.org web pages but discarded it years ago (mouthpiece/barrel combinations). It's less than useful - people change their combos all the time, and indicates generally nothing useful.

YMMV ...
