yes. the alto clarinet is slightly thinner then the bass clarinet, but also is in a different key.

the alto balances a clarinet choir very nicely.

the bass clarinet is the driving support.

Depends: Which alto? Which bass? Among the better brands, I think basses are more consistent, but a good alto (such as the Selmer pro model from the late 1980s) can have as strong a tone as a bass, depending on the reed and mouthpiece. When I want a big tone on my Selmer alto, a tone that compares with the other clarinets, I use a Selmer HS* mouthpiece with an alto sax reed.

Well said, Lelia, I had been thinking of saying essentially the same of my B Series Selmer alto. Here, our smaller bore cls with a good [somewhat wide tip, long lay] mp give all the volume I need. I like my Pomarico 3 glass, plenty of sound without losing tonality. Don
