 Eb clarinet case
Author: clarijen

Does anybody know where I can find a case for Eb clarinet - preferably "pro-tec style" with shoulder strap etc?

I know Pro-tec and Bam do not make them, I've contacted a couple of stores with no luck, one of whom directed me to Badger State, which I called and they only do a generic vinyl case.

I would also be interested in a Bb/Eb combination, but the Giglotti one is out of stock on the 1stopclarinet website and they haven't responded to my email asking when it might be back...

I searched earlier on the bboard and found a topic where someone mentioned converting a Bb protec one - but now I can't find that same topic. That would be a possibility though I am not all that handy and wouldn't want to end up ruining a perfectly good case!

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hmm... I've drooled over these before - I like the fact that you can get inserts to carry whatever combination of instruments is necessary. But sadly I don't think my budget will stretch that far right now...

Check with Ben Redwine. He handles a line of cases that might work for your eefer and they are modestly priced . I got one to try from him and it was just a tad too short for a Penzel Mueller Eb.

I found my Eb case on Ebay, it was a Protec flute case converted for an Eb clarinet. I have had it for just under a year, and it's in great shape. It protects my Eb and has plenty of space for everything else.

That would be great, if only I knew how to convert them...

Hank - thanks, I have sent an email to Ben Redwine in case he is able to help.

I've just got BAM light double case for a colleague and the "goods and chattels" slot at hte top, inside can easily be converted to and Eb slot. (Bell goes inside Bb bell I'm told!).

1Stop Clarinet and Sax Shop has a triple case for Bb/A/Eb branded "Gigliotti"for two hundred bucks on sale.

Howarth has a single eefer case for about 42 British pounds.

Also, your local repair shop should have a catalog that includes generic versions. My tech, Valley Repair in Salem VA got one for me from a parts supplier catalog.

Finally, you might contact Sue Raycraft, who is on this list. She made a really nice Bb/Eb combo case for me very inexpensively from a larger generic Bb case she had.

On that auction site, she does business as Susieray's Music. If you put out an APB for her here or check to see if she has her e-mail address available here as a subscriber, I'm almost sure she'll contact you.

Thanks everyone for your helpful suggestions. Unfortunately Ben Redwine no longer carries cases, Sue Raycraft doesn't make them any more and 1stop is all out of stock. So I think Howarths looks like the best option. However, if anyone knows of any links/hints/instructions on how to convert your own case I would be very interested to see that too, as a converted flute case might work well.

Thanks again for your help!

There have been threads here about building and modding cases; here are three:

Unfortunately Terry Horlick's pages on the subject, which he just re-loaded last August, are gone again. Only one seems to be available on the Internet Archive, and that without pictures:

You might see if the nice peole at Patricola would sell just a case. I like mine. Look them up.

The Ortola case (as suggested earlier by bmcgar) has loads of room:

And I'm sure you could probably get it at a better price in the US.

Thanks Chris P, I think the Ortola case is the best option if I am not up to making one - sadly it doesn't seem to be available over here at all, in fact the only place I can find it is Howarths. The price is fine but the shipping is more than half as much again. May be my best option though!

Another possibility: on a good day at nearly any big flea market or target-rich environment for yard sales, you can get a good, sturdy attaché case, the right size to gut and re-do on the inside for a pair of clarinets. Going rate in the Washington, D. C. area's cheap markets for a used attaché case in excellent condition is US$5 to $8.
