 Who are the Clarinetist?
Author: ABerry

Greetings,

I just watched a 1992 live recording DVD of Itzhak Perlman playing the Beethoven and Brahms violin concerti, with the Berliner Philharmoniker, conducted by Daniel Barenboim. Does anyone know who the Clarinetists are? Thanks.

Allan

looks to me like Karl-Heinz Steffens playing principal and Walter Seyfarth playing 2nd...

Could be wrong though.

Itzhak Perlman was stricken with Polio as a child living in Israel. At that time there was no vaccine or cure for the childhood disease. His legs were badly crippled by the disease, and he has used crutches for his entire professional career.
As a friend, and classmate at Juilliard, I always found Itzak to be one of the most capable and cheerful colleagues one could ever meet. His physical difficulties never held him back from enjoying the College life, his hugely successful career on the concert stage, many good friends, and a happy marriage.
He is truly a Man to be admired.

BTW: He will be our Conductor next season (2008-09) at the Westchester Philharmonic, a short distance from NYC where he lives.

"He is truly a Man to be admired."

I've never met the bloke and I doubt I ever will, but he is one of my most favourite musicians of all time - and also the late, great Rostropovich being another musician who I admire.

Thanks everyone for the information. The Beethoven however has two different clarinetists. Anyone know who they are?
When I purchased this DVD, I expected to see Karl Leister...The DVD was recorded in 1992 and if I remember correctly Leister retired in 1993. So how many clarinetists are there in the BPO?

It was probably Wenzel Fuchs and Peter Giesler on first and second respectively.

No. It was Steffens and Seyfarth.

Again, thanks for the information...

So, the Beethoven has Steffens and Seyfarth, now what about the Brahms, anyone know who the clarinetists are? (I meant to ask about the Brahms in my second post, however I typed Beethoven by mistake...)

Ice, no it doen't matter, but I like to know who's playing clarinet. I think it would be great if the orchestra roster was included with the credits..

Liquorice,

I guess it is I who is confused...It's the Brahms with Steffens and Seyfarth and it's the Beethoven I'd like to know about...As for a link here is the 3rd movement...www.youtube.com/watch?v=JdYGmPH9fcs

I actually have the dvd of both of these performances, and I was currious who the clarinetists are.
