 Need to record concert. HELP???
Author: mamacinnamon
Date:   2008-04-02 22:37

My daughter has a concert coming up April 20th. The band instructor told us he is not going to record it, that he doesn't have the time.

I really want the concert recorded because I want to send a copy to my sister halfway across the United States. She will be so disappointed to have not gotten to hear it.

Can anyone please tell me if there is a recording device I can purchase to record this concert? I have limited income so I really cannot afford to spend over $100. It means the world to my daughter and to my sister.

Thank you for your responses.

mamacinnamon,

The Sony minidisc recorder works very well and you might be able to find a used one on an auction site for your budget.
Make sure that it comes with operating instructions (the controls on mine are not particularly "intuitive") and a microphone.

Alternatively, for a single event perhaps you could rent one, or a video recorder that will capture the sound as well.

I hope this will help.

The cheapest decent recorder I know is the Zoom H2, but it is twice your budget $199.

Go to a music store that sells guitar/drum/keyboard stuff. Ask the folks that work there and you will probably be able to find someone that can do it for less than $100 and make a few CD copies. Also, any nearby University music department will have a student or 2 that would do it for 50 bucks.

Excellent suggestion,Sky, and maybe a student at the school itself. Learnng how to use a strange recorder can be a task.

I have Sharp MD 701 minidisc player bought in 2000 which costed at that time in Iceland around 500$ but I think it's no longer made. Then I got like 4 years ago a stereo microphone Sony ECM-MS907 which you can get for around 65-80$ and I think this is the minimum quality you could accept. You should then have someone to go over the recording on a Mac computer for correcting minior flaws.

Since it's so long since I bought this player and microphone I have a question for the technical experts here: Are Minidisc and a stereo Microphone still the thing for amateur use or are digital recorders with maybe built in microphone now the thing like this one for example http://www.wwbw.com/Sony-PCM-D50-Portable-Linear-PCM-Digital-Recorder-i760501.music ?

To keep it simple since you probably will not have any stage microphones you might try a digital voice recorder in your price range. I have one that will record several hours and plugs into the USB port of my computer to transfer the file. It works amazingly well for seminars. Just try to sit in the center.

It will not give you high quality playback like some of the other items suggested but will at least preserve the concert for you to share. Personally I use a video camera for my daughter’s concerts but it does pick up the "extra" noise of the audience around us. I've noticed that since I am concentrating on the concert I don't pay much attention to it.

You might also ask the band director if there is someone he would allow to handle the recording for him.

Iceland clarinet:
Minidisc are slowly but surely becoming gizmos of the past. Newer better portable recorders can now record hours of uncompressed audio at very high quality.
Price range from $200 to $2000. I own the $200 model (Zoom H2) and am happy with it although if I were to do it again I woudl buy a Marantz PMD620.

http://www.wingfieldaudio.com is a good resource for figuring out which recorder is best for you.

disclaimer: Although I get no money from the site, the owner of the business is a friend of mine.

Yes, Iceland, the Sony mini-disc recorders have been superceded by systems that are more flexible. However, they are excellent units and some owners love them.

My daughter and I thank each of you for your responses. I am truly grateful for the information you each have given. We will be looking into the options and I am hopeful we will have something set up for the concert. Again, thank you for taking your time to answer.
