i have just taken delivery of a new barrel for my A clarinet made by a Taiwanese craftsman Huang Wenchia (Huang is the family name). My student had one, and i loved it so much he said he would pick one out for me when he was in Taiwan for New Year, and i could buy either his old one or the new one- whichever i liked best (a splendid fellow, eh?).
In the end i chose the "new" one, and find myself cursing that i didn't get hold of it BEFORE i performed the Mozart Quintet last week! The sound is much more "open" and "clear" than my Chadash, resonant yet with still a lot of "core" in the sound.
The intonation is pretty good- the 12ths are a little wider at the bottom end than on the Chadash, but actually this matches the tuning on my B flat a little better (using a Backun barrel). A few other notes are noticably better, while one a little worse (i'm talking by very small degrees- enough that i'll get used to it and adjust, not more than 2 cents either way)
I wonder if any other players on the BB have encountered these barrels- i know they are known in France and Germany (i believe a player in Berlin Phil has a version for Deutsche System).
I'm now trying to find an excuse to travel to Taiwan to pick out a barrel for my B flat clarinet....

I tried them at the 2005 clarinetfest and they were quite good. Very consistent and well made.
