 Audition mishaps?
Author: SVClarinet09

I swear this year has been a crazy one, audition wise. Yesterday at my all state audition, my solo judge's phone went off in the middle of my piece. The room was terribly loud and the judge had a music ringtone so that was even louder. I was just wondering, how common are these things? Anyone have any weird experiences in the audition room?

Well, at the last solo festival I went to, the light in the room was pretty low. I could see, but my judge was VERY concerned about it, and stopped me three or four times while I was playing to move me to a different part of the room that she thought would be better lighted. It was very nice of her, but I could see just fine!

Unless a very close member of your judge's family was in the labor and delivery room, I can think of NO good reason for the judge to have left his or her phone turned on during the auditions. Probably an oversight, but a genuine breach of etiquette and respect, none the less. I hope you got a profuse apology and extra points on your score for the insult!

The cell phone episode reminds me of a great story I heard at the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic last December. Prior to one of the many concerts at Midwest the announcer (a Midwest official, I think) reminded everyone prior to the concert to turn off or silence their cell phones and pagers. Tounge-in-cheek he announced a new "policy" for Midwest performances.

If someone's cell phone or pager rang during a performance that person would be "fined" $100. IF, however, they answered the phone or page the fine would be increased to $1000! Funny but effective. That particular concert had almost 1000 in attendance and I don't think a single ring tone was heard.

Sadly cell phones are like flies. They're everywhere!

Tailwinds,

Lynn

I'm trying to send a very funny MP3 file from an audition but having some mishaps myself. I'll see what I can do. It's worth listening to.

I was asked to sightread something that had a tempo indication in French that (at the time) I couldn't translate. The judge declined to translate it for me, saying something like "use your musicality". So I stumbled along as best I could, which wasn't much. I found out later I had gone twice as fast as I should have. :(

When in doubt, slow perfect is better than fast badly.

Have you read the post by James Zimmerman on the Facebook Clarinet Jobs group? He wrote about a fire alarm going off in the final round of his Boston Symphony audition, for which he was runner-up. It's great reading, but heartwrenching.

Yeah, a fire alarm went off (only for a second but more than once!) during the Coast Guard Band auditions about a week ago as well. Luckily, it wasn't during my audition but I feel terrible for the person that had to deal with that!
