I was given a Jean Martin Paris Low pitch clarinet. It is marked 1960 twice on the barrel as well as 456. No other markings are anywhere that I can find except for the bell. Any information on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, Steve B

Glassguy: I was wondering if the horn actually says "Low Pitch" or "LP" on it somewhere and where does it so indicate. I say that because that number 456 on it is suspicious, as a high pitch horn is usually A=456. You might check it with a tuner to see if it is sharp across all registers. Often barrels and bells get changed around so they aren't always a reliable indicator of what type horn you have. Eu

The term "low pitch" is on the bell. On the body in one location is marked Jean Martin Paris with an M logo but low pitch is not inscribed there. So what do I have? I neglected to mention that it comes with a "Balbilt Elkhart Ind."mouthpiece with "student" stamped into it. Sounds like this might be a bits and pieces horn.

You will probably need to test it with a tuner to see just what you have there. Usually if a horn is of the vintage where they had HP and LP horns, the maker stamped which pitch it was on the body of the horn. The bell and barrel aren't the most reliable places to find useful info about an instrument, esp. an older one, as they can and do get changed over the years.
