Slap a bell on that thing, please! What a waste of a full-Boehm clarinet. Sounds like he's playing on an old Fibercane reed. I suppose his sound is appropriate for that style of music, but to me it just sounds horrible. I'm sure he's a fabulous player in his genre, but my ears are too Westernized to take it.

I think a lot of that sound has to do with the position of the, er, exhaust pipe (lacking a bell) in relation to the microphone. (it's varying quite a bit during the performanc)

Great stuff! I'd love to be able to play ethnic music like that. How does he get those sounds? It's hard to tell if he's connected up to a computer that can modify sounds.

I watched a couple of this clarinetist's other videos along with one by Ivo Papasov and I think the sound is exactly what they want it to be. It's not as obvious in this video as it is in some of the others but both this guy and Papasov appear to have wireless pickups on their barrels. I suspect the sound is being processed to give the tone we hear. If I'm right, the mike on stage is for show or possibly multiple effects. I agree with you, David B. That guy (actually these guys, including Papasov) can play!
And, in case some of you didn't watch it all the way through, he does put on his bell toward the end (and uses one in all the other videos I watched).

As far as the sounds, I think he is just using themic at different angles to make those effects.

The brief glimpses that show a logo on the upper joint and bell in one of the other videos I watched suggest a Selmer to me but they are brief glimpses and blurry at that.
I don't see how he would get his sound by using the mic at different angles, given that the sound primarily comes out the toneholes rather than the bell. Also, Papasov doesn't use any mike other than the pickup attached to his barrel and he plays with pretty much the same tone.

Most Bulgarian players, like Neshev, use a Selmer Full Boehm. Typically Series 9 or 10.
The tone is exactly what it "should" be. He does use the mic on purpose to get the slight variations in timbre, but if you heard it without any amplification, it would still sound that way. I've heard some guys use effects (typically an octaver) to manipulate the sound but I don't believe Nesh is doing that here.
His father, by the way, plays accordion with Ivo.
