A good friend, a great guy, and a virtuoso player on Clarinet & Saxophone.

He will be missed, may he rest in peace.

I will never forget hearing Mr Abato perform at the National Clarinet Convention in Denver around 1973 or 1974. He performed mainly on Bass Clarinet (he was Bass Clarinetist in the Met Orchestra at the time) and did an astounding version of "Flight of the Bumblebee," among other things.

His recording of the Ibert Concertino da Camera, even without the altissimo notes, remains my all time favorite version of this piece; amazing sound and expressiveness; virtuosity with soul.

I am very sorry to hear of this amazing man's passing.

He was an amazing player. I have a dub of him ripping through the finale of the Tchaikovsky violin concerto with the All Star Concert Band, in which he sat first chair, ahead of Al Gallodoro, Alex Williams, Bernard Portnoy, Joe Allard, Herb Blayman, and Charlie Russo.

His recording of the Ibert and Glazounov is wonderful. It was one of my first classical sax recordings and it stands the test of time.

Too bad that recording isn't availiable anymore - it's the best.

I had the opportunity to meet him once. He was a very charming and colorful guy.
