Just bought myself a christmas/hanukkah/kwanza present, a pair of Hugo Boss "Sauls", on sale a Macy's at approximately 65% off for the sole purpose of practicing the clarinet (actually my feet sweat so I'll probably take them and my socks off). I've dubbed them my"licorice-stick slippers". Not only do they darken my sound (they're three shades of black), but I can play the cadenzas in the Nielsen at an increased tempo. A friend of mine, who is also a clarinetist, practices in his boxer shorts because he perspires so profusely.

My slippers have Homer Simpson on them. Not sure what they do to my sound, but I hear myself shouting "D'oh!" when I make a mistake.

Bare feet give a great, warm, round sound. Much more effective than any special ligature.

Cass Tech, You gave us much more info than I needed to know, but my wife thinks. I'm a character. I'm practicing in the basement, where the temps are starting at 58. I wear long johns, a flannel shirt, a wool vest, and a hat. Plus, I wear fingerless gloves on my hands. Hmmmm, maybe she's right. Your attire must be right for you.

Didja ever notice that players who perform in white tie and tailcoats play better than most others?

It must be the tux.*

Call me dull, but I usually wear the clothes that I wore all day (at night) or the clothese that I'm going to wear (in the morning) except that I take off the long sleeve shirt and wear a tee shirt because I get hot when I practice.

Before a big performance I only practice in the clothes I will wear at the performance. Tux, shoes, cufflinks and all.

DrGrip: . . . and then remember those cello players of a few years back who, in their public performances, wore something not unlike your favorite practice outfit.

If you're female, I'll take the first flight to Waroona so we can play duets! (Alas, bound to be censored by the Clarinet Big Bros..)

When playing the big clarinets or a saxophone, I just make sure nothing loose can get caught under a key! Once saw (and heard!) a Marx Bros. moment onstage when a bass key on a female sax player's instrument chowed down on her long, Isadora-Duncan-type scarf. Didn't do much for her intonation or tone quality.

I stick to sweats and clothes I don't mind spit getting on. Also, people see my underdressiness and think twice about asking me to hang out because I'll have to change and use their time - more practice time!

I like to wear my clogs because I have this sneaking suspicion that my life is actually a musical, and I don't want to be unprepared for a big dance number.
You should see what I wear to the post office.
Other than those and the sequins, it has to be something that I won't sit on. There's nothing quite like almost strangling yourself with a long shirt when you go to brace yourself when you're about to hit a tough passage. Kinda ruins the mood.
