I was wondering if anyone has ever played or heard these following two trio pieces for clarinet, violin and piano:
John Harbison trio
Alexander Arutunian trio (suite)
Any opinions on them would be greatly appreciated! Also, where could I find these pieces to purchase? Thanks!

This may be completely useless. If so, I apologize.
I don't know of a "Trio" for violin, clarinet and piano by Harbison (but that doesn't mean one doesn't exist). However, if the piece you are looking for is "Variations" for violin, clarinet and piano, there are two (CD) recordings that I am aware of. One is on Northeastern Records (NR 230-CD). The recording dates from 1987 and may be out of print but you could try contacting Northeastern University in Boston. (A quick check of their website didn't turn up anything for me but that doesn't prove anything.)
It has also been recorded by the American Chamber Players for Koch International (7027). Also probably out of print. Amazon lists both as "limited availability" which, in my experience, usually means "not available unless someone decides to sell a used copy" but you could try there and sellers like Parnassus or Princeton.
I am not aware of any recording of the Arutunian (but, again, that doesn't mean one doesn't exist).

I want to do a clarinet trio for my recital.
Prefreably clarinet, violin or viola or cello, piano.. or something to that extent
Thinking of doing Brahms,
Not sure about the Bartok, and I've already played the Mozart Kegellstat

I don't know the Harbison piece, but I love listening to the Arutiunian Suite, what a cool piece it is! I hope to play it someday. Commissioned by the Verdehr Trio, and recorded by them.......The Making of a Medium, Vol. 5, Crystal Records CD745. That would be a great choice, if you've got an excellent violinist and pianist. On that same CD is another great trio, Schickele's Serenade for Three. That one I've played, and it a gas. Both are published and available.

I can recommend two very enjoyable trios to you.
Trio Pathetique by Michail Glinka (Breitkopf & Hartel)
Trio in Eb, Op. 43 by Conrad Kreutzer (Musica Rara)
Both are published for clarinet, piano, and cello OR bassoon. Our trio has done both of them; they're fun to play, and both were well-received by the audiences.

Harbison's Variations for Violin, Clarinet and piano is a tremendous work! One of my favorite chamber works from the late 20th century. It's available from Associated Music Pub. (G. Schirmer)

Trios with violin, viola, or cello are all very well, but let's think big! Bottesini wrote a Grand Duo for clarinet and double bass with orchestra; a piano reduction is available from eble.com

I strongly encourage you to perform Harbison's variations for clarinet violin and piano. I would say it is extremely technically demanding, and extremely rewarding. Many of the variations are in canon between the clar and violin, variation 10 is a canon at the 16th note. It is tricky to align. It is written for A clarinet, and makes use of the entire range in a solo clarinet variation of quick 16th notes with off beat accent groupings. There is also much lyrical playing, and a few effects at the end.
Tough work but worth it. I have played it on several occasions, as it was introduced to me by my teacher at the time, Loren Kitt, who is the clarinetist who recorded the work with the American Chamber Players listed above.

There's dozens of works for clarinet, violin, and piano in the repertoire of the Verdehr Trio. Many of the pieces were commissioned by the group. Here's a listing:

OMG,
Lynn, our local folks did the Glinka Trio Pathetique with a fiddle playing the clarinet part (and, of course, a cellow on the "high alto" part). I got the music out of protest and found the clarinet part to be idiomatic clarinet stuff --the sort of wonderful music that "belongs" to the clarinet (like th Brahms Sonatas).
Criminal thievery to "fiddle" with clarinet music.
(I'm currently working on a transcription of the Saint Seans' Intro and Rondo Capriccio violin music for clarinet, but that's a different matter.)
