Anyone applying for this new orchestra set to begin August 2008 in Qatar? I'm not sure whether I would embarrass myself or not at the audition, having never held a pro job before, as it looks like they're building a very good orchestra, auditioning throughout Europe. So no idea if this is the kind of thing for musicians starting out or if they're looking for seasoned pros only.
Can anyone shed any light?

I know this isn't exactly the answer to your question, but...
I recommend that you apply/audition regardless. It can't hurt to try. You never know, you could be exaclty what they're looking for. Even if you don't make the cut, you'd have another audition experience under your belt.
There's nothing you should be embarrassed about.

Hi,
A story about Qatar. I was in the country for about two weeks in the mid-1990s for a business trip for my university. I got a chance to hear the Emir's Band at a televised ceremony and noted that it was an all-brass group ala British Brass Band. Later that same day I was walking in the souk and stumbled onto a music store. Always on the search for an overlooked musical instrument or MP treasure, I went and had a great visit with the employees.
I looked at the brass, percussion, and electric instruments and seeing no woodwinds, asked about it. They said "we don't have any woodwind player here that we know of."
My reply was "so then I can assume that I am the best clarinet player in Qatar!" We all laughed. It was funny at the time.

PS Doha is a beautiful city right on the Gulf. The Qataris are very gracious hosts. I had an enjoyable stay (Pizza Inn and Burger King were right across the road from my hotel, the Ramada). They drive like crazy over there!

Qatar is a rapidly developing country, and they seem to be interested in contributing to the global arts community. This seems like a great opportunity. I would apply, but with working full-time in this band and finishing my Master's, getting over to Europe to audition isn't feasible.

The deadline says Oct 5 but they still sent me application forms - you think they've had little interest and are desperate? I mean, does anyone know anyone who has applied?
For what its worth I'm only going for Principal or Second... No Eb or Bass for me!

It is not unusual to use a grace period. Just like when the rehearsal officially starts at 7:45pm so that by 8pm everyone's on board...

Ben,
You've not been playing in the groups I frequent. The downbeat is at the prescribed time.
Or as Dr. William D. Revelli at the U of Michigan used to say "To be on-time is to be late; to be early is to be on-time!" I heard him say that several times and he meant it.

Anyone else auditiong for the QNSO?
I got mine next Wed in London (Hilton Gatwick). It would be good to meet up with players from the BBoard.
Regards
Dominic
PS getting nervous now thinking about it...

Hi Everyone,
An update on Qatar. I am here right now on a short assignment for my university but I may be in residence for the 2011-2012 academic year.
Before I began this trip, I made contact with the Doha Wind Band (much like a good community band) as well as one of the local jazz players. I think I'll be playing clarinet with the Wind Band and my jazz contact said "if you play as well as I think you do from what you are telling me, there is plenty of jazz work here."
How bizarre is this. Gigs have dried up in Toledo and one of two jazz clubs closed last week. But in Doha, I can get lots of work it would seem.
So, are there any others on this BB that are in Doha? How accurate is my information?
Regards,
HRL

In around 1967 or early 1968, there was an announcement in The International Musician that Iran (then ruled by the Shah) was looking for players of Western wind instruments to play in the Tehran Philharmonic and teach at the conservatory to train their replacements. (Strings and percussion were part of Iranian music and so weren't needed.)
I tried hard to learn when and where the auditions would be. Since this was before the days of Google, I never found out.
I've always wondered who got the clarinet jobs. Does anyone else remember this?
