 Cane getting softer?

Over here in the SF Bay Area I've been noticing many of my colleagues moving up a strength in reeds (Vandoren V12). I too recently moved up from 4 to 4.5 after having played size 4 V12 reeds for years. Has any one else using Vandoren V12 reeds noticed that they are getting softer? Of course, the fact that I'm in the wet, humid, foggy climate of the SF Bay Area might have some impact... what do you all think? Could Vandoren be using softer cane or poorly grown cane or could they be cutting their reeds differently than they did a few years ago?

I think someone addressed this a few weeks back, and the consensus was that reeds come from living plants, and their consistencies will vary, depending on growing and climatological variances over the years.

the dimensions have not changed. I think the 4 of about 1990 did the job that a 5 does today.

About a year ago, I thought my V12s were getting softer, so I switched to the same strength in the Trads (blue box). Now, THOSE reeds seem to be getting harder and I'm in the transitional stage again switching down one strenght in the Trads or moving back to the V12s (I was using before) which seem to have regained their zing. At times like these, those Legere's are once more calling to me.............
