Hi all:
I have just come by a Bay Clarinet mouthpiece (B flat clarinet) that I am really enjoying. Can anyone tell me what the markings on it might mean?
It has no logo, like later Bay mouthpieces I have seen. It has two lines down by the cork, one line near the beak.
It has the following markings engraved between the two lines and the cork:
0434 Charles Bay 2/63
Ithaca College
It plays pretty full and dark and altissimo register speaks clear and bright and easily at that. Anybody know the approximate date of manufacture?? Does the 2/63 mean something in that regard?
Thanks,
Steve

2/63 probably means "made in Feb of 1963". The other numbers perhaps mean that was the 434th one he made. I have a similar--one line up, two lines down--Bay mpc, purchased in 1962, with only his name and #0333 engraved in script on the side (no date) and most likely only slightly predates yours. I'm only guessing, but the lines may suggest that the mpc was made from a Chedeville blank. Hope this info helps, but the most important thing is that your mouthpiece plays well for you and you like it. Enjoy.

Thanks William.
I have read in an older thread that I found after I posted my question, that perhaps the 0434 signified that the tip opening was 1.04 and the facing length was 34mm.
Any way, you are right, I am enjoying it!
Steve
