 18/6 Low Eb Selmer Bb...
Author: Chris P

I've seen listed on the famous auction site a Selmer (Paris) Bb clarinet to low Eb, except this one isn't loaded up with the usual full Boehm gadgetry. It's the same key system as a standard N.1 Boehm system (17/6) but descends to low Eb.

How rare are these? I thought it was only the full Boehm (N.8), Marchi and full Mazzeos that descended to low Eb.

Hi Chris, YES, "sounds" rare to me. Took a quickie look at the ?first 50? Selmer cls, 214 in all, didn;t find it. Is 18/6 in its description or other wordage, also is it a GB auction? I have 4 extra keyed cls, fork, fork + artic., fork +artic + Eb lever, and Full Boehm. The low Eb has always been the last addition I've seen, prob due to L J length. Interested, Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

My memory of this model was that the mechanism had balky springs, and was prone to binding. The throat tones were VERY oddly pitched. The FB and Mazzeo versions addressed many of the tuning issues.

I thought the open hole closure on the FB version tuned best, but the pad was difficult to fit, even with flute pads.

Some of the older Buffet versions in the same kit were quite playable.

Of course, pros will have access to fraising tools (and useful experience) in making these work well...

It's listed in France (ebay.fr)

It's a P-series (though not carrying the 'Centered Tone' logo), all the lower keywork looking very original but has a damaged lower joint tenon and what looks like a split bell.

I'm fairly sure Selmer offered any combination of the four extras (low Eb, left-hand Eb, articulated G#, seventh-ring forked Bb), at least in the early years. Just low Eb seems to have been very uncommon. There are a couple of combinations I've never seen (low Eb and left-hand Eb, for example, which seems a very plausible choice) but I assume they do exist.
